Sailing Areas and Hazards

1.5 Nautical Mile Sailing Area

The 1.5 mile area extends roughly 1.5 miles from the boat house. The eastern edge is the main channel. The North border is the Long Wharf mud flats, the western border is the West Haven shore, and the southern border is the sand spit and mid harbor breakwater. Sailors should not enter or cross the main New Haven Harbor Channel. At low tide, this area does include some shallow areas. Sailors should understand how to get themselves free from the sand and mud.

3 Nautical Mile Sailing Area

The 3 mile area extends roughly three miles from the boat house. The inner harbor area is the same as the “1.5 mile area”, but to the south extends to include Morris Cove and the Outer Harbor inside the outer three breakwaters. Sailors should avoid sailing in the main New Haven Harbor channel as much as possible. At low tide, this area does include some shallow areas. Sailors should understand how to get themselves free from the sand and mud.

Sailors must have Dock Master Permission to Sail in the 3 NM Area. (see Permission).
